Pattern and Movement

How do you solve the problem of elevating the design of a room that creates interest, beauty, and more than one pattern or paint color?

This is an age-old problem that one is challenged with and may not know how to decide what wallpaper to use, or which wall should be an accent wall? Is the rug more important or the furniture?

Nursery from Nantucket in MIlford portfolio of cynthiastewartdesign.com

This beautiful nursery room has charm, color, patterns and spatial relief.

This room is for a three year old girl to enjoy, and should take her to her teen years. The wallpaper is a medium scale floral with white contrast in the background that gives a light and airy feel. Yet, the pattern with all the colors dance above the wainscoting creating contrast and elegance that has visual movement. The blue checked floor is different in scale and reveals a more compact design.

These patterns can be used together, because the size and shapes complement one another. The white chair also brings a place of rest for the eyes. Yet, the pillow has a hint of the wallpaper pattern in the fabric, but on a little larger scale. Over all the room is alive with color, movement, balance and continuity. These are necessary elements of interior design to create a beautiful room.
